The Department of Social Work has been growing from strength to strength right from its inception in the year 2005 as part of the then P.G. Centre of Karnatak University, Dharwad. Presently, the Social Work Programmes offered through its main campus has carved a unique niche for themselves in the higher education scenario in the region through its well-qualified faculty, practice-based curriculum, innovative pedagogy, and socially-responsive extension programs.

The Department of Social Work has been a front-runner in providing quality education with experiential learning, an excellent placement record, organizing numerous conferences, seminars, and workshops, and a lot of extension activities aimed at the inclusive development of marginalized sections of society.
| Eligibility | Candidates who have passed BSW/BA/B.Sc/B.Com/BCA/BBM/LLB of Rani Channamma University, Belagavi or any other university recognized as equivalent thereto are eligible for admission to MSW course. |

| Scope | Master of Social Work (MSW) is a two-year Master’s Programme in Social Work. MSW is a very unique Programme as its curriculum has a very good blend of theory and practicum. Learners of this Programme get wonderful opportunities to develop their personalities with multidisciplinary perspectives and leadership competencies. Specializations offered are: i) Human Resource Development (HRD), ii) Urban and Rural Community Development (URCD), iii) Medical and Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW). |
| Career Prospects | MSW is a career-oriented Programme that has excellent employment opportunities in the government, non-governmental and corporate sectors. |
| Admission Procedure | Admission is done as per the norms of the State government and the university, usually in July and August every year. |
| Eligibility | Any candidate who has obtained a Post-Graduate Degree in Social Work from a recognized University including foreign students (sponsored by their Embassies) and sponsored candidates securing not less than 55% marks (50% in the case of SC/ST/Cat-I/Physically challenged candidates) at the Post-Graduate Degree shall be eligible to apply for the PhD Degree Programme. |

| Mode of Study | Regular-Full-Time/Part-time |
| Programme Duration | Every full-time candidate shall take a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years, and every part-time candidate shall take a minimum of four years and a maximum of six years from the date of Provisional Registration (i.e., from the date of commencement of course work) to submit his/her thesis. |
| Scope | The scope of the program encompasses social work education, practice, and research in general and the fields and specializations of the social work profession in particular. |
| Career Prospects | There are a lot of governmental, private, and non-governmental organizations in practice, teaching, and research settings, offering highly professional roles for persons with a PhD in Social Work. |

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Machilipatnam, conducted a successful two-day campus recruitment drive for HR-specializing students from the Department of Social Work at Karnataka University, Dharwad, on August 23–24, 2024.
The Department of Social Work, in association with the People with Disabilities Cell, RCU, celebrated World Disability Day on 27/12/2023. Smt Rajeshwari Jainapur, Registrar, presided over the program. Campus Selection interviews for MSW IV semester HRD students were conducted on 26.09.2023 by Shri Shrishail, HR Executive of SFS, Aeques (SEZ), where Ms. Sana Rajapure was selected as an HR Trainee.
A General Health and Bone Density Check-Up was organized by the Department in association with Shri Ortho Hospital, Belagavi, and Health Centers, RCU Belagavi on 10.08.2022 for the teaching and non-teaching staff of the University.
A One-Day Workshop on “Proposal for Research Grants: Effective Drafting and Presentation Skills” was conducted on 09.11.2021 for the teaching fraternity. Another university-level one-day workshop on “Opportunities for Social Work Practice in Women and Child Development Department” was organized on 18.01.2022 with resource persons from the WCD department.
Classrooms of the Department of Social Work are well-equipped with LCD projectors and KYAN - Community Computers. The Departmental Library has a very good collection of books and journals pertaining to all the fields of Social Work. Wi-Fi facility is made available to all the students. The students are also encouraged to make use of the Computer Labs equipped with high-speed internet facility, LCD projectors and well-qualified staff to assist the users.
