Rani Channamma University, Belagavi

1. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Library and Information Science started as a new addition to the School of Applied Sciences, RCU Belagavi in the academic year 2011-12. The department offers a professional two-year Master's degree programme (MLISc) and a Ph.D. degree programme in Library and Information Science. The MLISc programme is designed to match the requirements of academia and industries. It provides the knowledge and skill sets required for the emerging information society and prepares the next generation of information professionals.

Mission

  1. To adapt to the core LIS curriculum in a changing environment.
  2. To integrate ICT tools and techniques in the LIS course.
  3. To contribute to quality in LIS education and research.
  4. To inform about areas of Library and Information Science to train and build LIS professionals addressing the frontier.
  5. To train LIS professionals by organizing training/workshops.

2. PROGRAMMES

Department of Library and Information Science (MLISc)
Eligibility The LISc course duration comprises two years and four semesters. Candidates who have passed any degree examination from a recognized university under the 10+2+3 system and have secured at least 50% marks in aggregate in Part III (main subjects) are eligible to apply for admission to this course. In the case of candidates belonging to SC/ST category, the percentage of marks relaxation will be as per university guidelines issued from time to time.
Admission Criteria Admission shall be made as per the reservation policy and directions issued by the Government of Karnataka in this regard from time to time and as per the rules prescribed by the university from time to time.

Scope Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MLISc) is a two-year comprehensive professional programme. There is a high demand for the library profession in the job market. MLISc postgraduates can work as Librarians, Information Scientists, Knowledge Managers, Technical Editors, Consultants, etc. Those who qualify in UGC-NET or SLET exam can enter the academic field as Assistant Professor or Assistant Librarian in a university or college. Those who qualify for UGC-JRF can pursue research in the field of Library and Information Science with UGC Fellowship.
Career Prospects A candidate completing M.Sc in Library and Information Science can find lucrative career opportunities in government sectors/organizations and can have a highly productive career in teaching, research and development, and IT industry.
