1. About Us

The Department of Sociology is one of the pioneering departments of the institution started with the establishment of Kittur Rani Channamma Post Graduate Centre, Belagavi of Karnatak University, Dharwad in the year 1982. Later, it continued as a Department of the independent Rani Channamma University, Belagavi in July 2010.

Vision

To nurture sociological perspective about society.
To inculcate scientific temper in social science research.
To imbibe multidisciplinary perspective in solving social problems.
To provide quality based education and promote skill development.

Mission

To instill confidence and courage in students to face emerging global challenges and enable them to excel in the contemporary competitive world.

Goals

To help students study problems in various sociological perspectives and assess their historical traditions.
To teach students distinct modes of inquiry; and in this regard, an attempt is made to expose them to the sub-fields of the discipline.

Achievements

Faculty Extended Activities: The faculty of the department delivers special lectures in various academic bodies and institutions across India and the World. Prof. Chandrika is Co-convener of professional body Indian Sociological Society (ISS). Dr. Ravi S. Dalawai is Convener of Research Committee-06: Neighborhood, Weaker Sections, Minorities and Human Rights of Karnataka Sociology Association (KSA). Dr. Sumanth S. Hiremath served as Convener of RC-09: Media, Science and Technology (2019-2024). He also served as Joint Secretary in the Executive Committee.

2. Programmes

M.A. in Sociology

Eligibility	Candidates who have passed the degree of Rani Channamma University or any other university recognized as equivalent thereto, with Sociology as one of the subjects, securing at least 45% marks in aggregate at the degree level are eligible to apply. However, a relaxation of 5% marks in respect of SC/ST/Cat-I will be allowed as per the prevailing rules of the University and Government Orders from time to time.
Admission Criteria	Admission will be made as per the reservation policy and directions issued by the Government of Karnataka and the University from time to time.

Duration	02 Years - 04 Semesters CBCS Scheme
Scope	Sociology is the scientific study of society, providing an understanding of how and why society functions and how social institutions affect individual lives. The overall objective of the Master's degree in Sociology is to systematically understand how individuals and groups create, maintain, and change social relationships, social structures, and institutions over time.
Career Opportunities	A Master's degree in Sociology can open many doors in the professional arena ranging from Government, Corporate jobs, and NGOs. Common jobs include Teachers, Researchers, Administrators, Counselors, and Consultants. Sociologists are employed in Research Institutes, Criminal Justice System, Public Health Organizations, Private Businesses, Law Firms, International Agencies, Medical Centers, BPOs, Educational Institutions, Advertising Firms, Survey and Polling Organizations, Human Resources, and Journalism sector.

4. Program Specific / Course Outcomes

This program imparts scientific knowledge about society and its mechanism through theories and research methods.
Students learn a practical approach to data collection, statistical analysis, and techniques used in making conclusions.
This program provides an interdisciplinary approach to inculcate the spirit of responsible citizenship.
Students acquire quality-based skills, which enhance employability and open many opportunities in public and private sectors.
This program develops critical logical thinking and the ability to formulate coherent arguments, giving students an edge in any profession.

Best practices adopted by the department include Environmental Awareness, Promoting Human Values and Ethics, Encouraging students and research scholars for research projects, Encouraging collaborative interdisciplinary approaches and use of case studies, and providing career opportunities workshop for students.
