1. About Us

The Department of Sociology is one of the Pioneering Departments in the Institute, established along with the inception of Karnatak University Kittur Rani Channamma Post Graduate Centre, Belagavi in the year 1982. Further it has been continued as the Department of, independent Rani Channamma University, Belagavi in July, 2010.

Vision

To nurture Sociological perspective towards society.
To foster scientific approach in social science research.
To infuse multidisciplinary outlook in addressing the social issues.
To provide quality oriented education and promote skill development.

Mission

To instill confidence and fortitude amongst students to face emerging global challenges and enable them to excel in the contemporary competitive world.

Goals

To help the students to study the issues at various sociological perspectives and asses their historical traditions.
To teach students with unique methods of inquiry; and effort is made in this regard to expose them to sub-fields in the discipline.

Extended Activities of the Faculty:

Faculty of the department deliver special lectures in various educational institutions and organisations in India and world wide.
Prof. Chandrika served as the convener for the Research Committee- Marginalised & Weaker Sections, and Dr. Sumanth S. Hiremath served as the Convenor for RC-09: Media, Science and Technology (2019-2024) in the Professional Organisation Karnataka Sociological Association (KSA). They have served as Joint Secretary in the Executive Committee as well.

2. Programmes

M.A. in Sociology

Eligibility	Candidates who possess a degree of Rani Channamma University or a Degree of any other university recognised as equivalent thereto with Sociology as one of the subjects, having at least 45% of Marks in aggregate at degree level is eligible to apply. However, relaxation of 5% of marks in respect of SC/ST/Cat-I will be allowed as per prevailing rules of the University and Government Orders from time to time.
Admission Criteria	The admission shall be made as per the reservation policy and directions issued in this regard from time to time by the Government of Karnataka and also as per rules as prescribed by the University from time to time.

Scope	Master of Arts in Sociology is a two-years programme. Sociology is the scientific study of society that provides an understanding of How and Why Society functions and the impact of social institutions on individual lives. The overall objective of Master Degree in Sociology is to – systematically understand how individuals and groups create, maintain and change Social relationships, social structures and institutions over time.
Career Prospects	Sociology is an excellent career choice for individuals fascinated by the social behaviour of people. A broad field of study, a background in sociology helps to pursue a variety of career and research paths. Masters in Sociology degree can open up many doors in the professional arena from government to corporate jobs and NGO’s. The most common jobs held by sociologists are that of: Educators or Teachers, Researchers, Administrators, Consultants and Counselors. In some sectors, sociologists work closely with economists, political scientists, anthropologists, psychologists and social workers. Sociologists are employed by research institutes, The Criminal Justice System, Public Health and Welfare Organizations, Private Businesses, Law Firms, International Agencies, Medical Centers, BPOs, Educational Institutions, Advertising Firms, Survey and Polling Organizations, Human Resources and Journalism Sector.

4. Program Specific / Course Outcomes

The Programme impacts scientific knowledge about the society and its mechanism through theories and research methods.
The students learn practical approach to the techniques used in the data collection statistical analysis and inference drown.
The programme provides interdisciplinary approach to elicit attitudes of responsible citizenship.
The students acquire quality oriented skills that intensify employability and open up many avenues in public and private sectors.
The Programme develops critical logical thinking and ability to formaulate cogent argument which will give the students an edge in any profession.
