1. ABOUT


The School of Classical Kannada Studies is one of the most prominent departments in Rani Channamma University, Belagavi. It was started in 2010. Earlier it was a Department before the Rani Channamma University emerged, when it was a P.G. Centre of Karnataka University, Dharwad. Now the School exists with an independent faculty, and a separate Dean was appointed for this School.

The School of Classical Kannada Studies is a vibrant institution dedicated to serving Kannada, Kannadigas, Karnataka, and its culture and literature. It has eight dedicated teaching faculty and adequate non-teaching staff. It is situated in a bilingual geographical and border area of Karnataka and Maharashtra States. The School is working as a bridge between two different cultures, languages, and literatures. Under this School, Ph.D. in Kannada, M.A. Kannada, P.G. Diploma in Translation, and P.G. Diploma in Vachana Studies courses are running. In the future, the School has prepared to start a P.G. Programme in Linguistics, a P.G. Programme in Folklore Studies, a P.G. Diploma in Jainology, and a P.G. Diploma in Gandhian Studies.

Ancient Valuable Knowledge which is extracted in the Kannada Language, Literature and Life Style will be spread out to the Universe.

2. PROGRAMMES


M.A. in Kannada
Eligibility The students who have successfully completed a three-year degree course with a minimum of 45% of marks in aggregate at the degree level are eligible to apply. However, a relaxation of 5% of marks for SC/ST/Cat-I will be allowed as per the prevailing rules of the University and Government Orders issued from time to time.
Admission Criteria The admission shall be made as per the reservation policy and directions issued in this regard from time to time by the Government of Karnataka and also as per rules as prescribed by the University from time to time.
Mode of Study Regular-Full-Time
Programme Duration MA in Kannada (Master of Arts in Kannada) is a two-year Master Degree program in Kannada.
Scope PG Graduates can engage in research activities through M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs. The degree provides a strong foundation for careers in translation and content writing. Opportunities also exist in government sectors, cultural organizations, media houses, and public relations. With a growing emphasis on regional languages, M.A. Kannada graduates are increasingly valued in administrative roles, competitive examinations, and literary institutions. Additionally, creative fields such as poetry, novel writing, screenplay writing, and theatre offer vibrant platforms for Kannada scholars.

Ph.D. in Kannada
Eligibility Candidates who have secured at least 55% of aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/Cat-1/Physically challenged) or an equivalent grade under the grading system, in their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from recognized Universities/Institutions.
Admission Criteria The admission shall be made as per the reservation policy and guidelines issued by the Government of Karnataka and also as per RCUB from time to time.
Mode of Study Full/Part-time
Programme Duration Minimum of 03 Years and Maximum of 05 years for Full-Time Candidates/ Minimum 04 Years and Maximum of 06 years for Part-Time Candidates.
Scope PhD holders can pursue teaching positions in colleges and universities.

Program Specific Outcome

All these programmes are in the School of Classical Kannada Studies. The entire programme leads towards spreading out the Kannada Language, Kannada Linguistics, Kannada Epigraphy, Kannada Folklore Studies, Racial and Ritual Studies of the Karnataka geographical boundary, the development of Kannada through the ages, etc. The students who study in the School of Classical Kannada Studies attain all about the Kannada Language and Culture.

Paper – 2.1 The course is core paper. It deals with ancient texts of Classical Kannada.
Paper – 2.2 The course is core paper. It deals with Medieval age texts of Classical Kannada.
Paper – 2.3 The course is core paper. It deals with the basic principles of Western criticism.
Paper – 2.4 The course is core paper. It deals with the basic Linguistic principles of Kannada.
Paper – 2.5.1 The course is optional (Soft) it deals with the ancient Classical Kannada texts.
Paper – 2.5.2 The course is optional (Soft) it deals with the Folk performing arts.
Paper – 2.5.3 The course is optional (Soft) it introduces Basic Principles of the Kannada social Linguistics with special reference to local dialects of Kannada.
Paper – 2.5.4 The course is optional (Soft) it introduces Comparative studies between eastern and western literature.
Paper – 2.6 The course is open optional (Soft) paper for other PG students those who are in CBCS. It deals with outstanding novels of modern literature.
Paper – 2.7 The course is core paper it contains skill components. This paper introduces editing, compiling, reporting and other activities for modern electronic and print media to the Students.
Semester – III
Paper – 3.1 The course is core paper. It deals with Indian literature. In this paper student will gain the knowledge about Indian literary heritage.
Paper – 3.2 The course is core paper. It deals with important modern literary forms of Kannada. The small stories of Kannada Literature will be discussed.
Paper – 3.3 The course is core paper. It deals with modern women literature in Kannada on the base of feminism.
Paper – 3.4 The course is core paper. It deals with the fictional literature in Kannada through the ages.
Paper – 3.5.1 The course is optional (Soft) it deals with one of the great forms like epic form of Kannada literature.
Paper – 3.5.2 The course is optional (Soft) it deals with the Folklore theories in the Folk studies.
Paper – 3.5.3 The course is optional (Soft) it introduces Basic Principles of the Dravidian Comparative Linguistics.
Paper – 3.5.4 The course is optional (Soft) it introduces the Comparative studies between the epic tradition in various Indian languages.
Paper – 3.6 The course is open optional (Soft) paper for other PG students those who are in CBCS. It deals with outstanding novels of modern Poetry and Drama.

Semester – IV
Paper – 4.1 The course is core paper. It deals with Modern Kannada Poetry and the Schools of modern Kannada Poetry up to present situation.
Paper – 4.2 The course is core paper. It deals with modern Criticism on poetry various isms in modern literature.
Paper – 4.3 The course is core paper. It deals with Kannada oral tradition in the various forms in the literary folk filed.
Paper – 4.4 The course is core paper. It deals with the Kannada Communication medias including print, electronic, social media.
Paper – 4.5.1 The course is optional (Soft) it deals with the modern classical texts in the Kannada literature.
Paper – 4.5.2 The course is optional (Soft) it deals with Traditional arts of theatre work in Kannada and within the Geographical boundary of Karnataka.
Paper – 4.5.3 The course is optional (Soft) it Introduces the Kannada linguistic and Grammatical tradition in Kannada Language.
Paper – 4.5.4 The course is optional (Soft) it Introduces the Comparative studies between the Indian Literature in special reference to school of thoughts, theories, isms.
Paper – 4.6 The course is core paper it is compulsory to the students. The students will prepared about 120 pages dissertations and submitted to department. The department will provide guides for them.
Paper – 4.7 The course is core paper it contains skill components. This paper introduces the writing about the commercial advertisement materials, preparation of telefilms, script writing, conducting of interviews for TV and radios, and producing future programs. The technics of conducting Functions and etc.

Department Research Profile

The Department of Kannada offers a variety of facilities to support academic and extracurricular activities. The department has a well-equipped library with a rich collection of Kannada literature, research journals and books. Students have access to Wi-Fi facilities to aid their studies and research work. The department encourages physical and recreational activities by providing access to sports equipment and organizing cultural programs. An open-air theater equipped with a sound system and a green environment is available for literary activities. All these facilities contribute significantly to the holistic development of students.
