Rani Channamma University, Belagavi
Botany is one of the fundamental disciplines of science dealing with the study of plants. The Term "Botany" is probably derived from the Ancient Greek word "botane", which means pasture, herbs, grass, or fodder. The study of plants is an important part in the effort of conservation of nature and natural resources, which has become crucial, especially on account of global warming and climate change. Major part of Belagavi District being a part of Westernghats-which has a high ecological and economical value due to High Endemism, Diverse Ecosystems, Threatened Species, Medicinal Plants and Genetic Resources and which plays an important role in determining the Indian monsoon weather pattern, influencing rainfall distribution and hence forth in agriculture, gives an opportunity to explore and contribute in conservational efforts creating a need for study of plants.
The course “Master of Science in Botany” was introduced at Rani Channamma University in the year 2015 under MOU with SKE’s G.S.S College Belagavi. The Department of Botany, established within the School of Basic Sciences of Rani Channamma University is committed to provide with botanical education of high quality and to make impressive impact in research field by training young minds. Currently M.Sc. Botany course is running in Rani Channamma University’s Constituent college; Sangolli Rayanna First Grade Degree College, with 5 Full-time Guest Faculties, and aims to shift to new campus of the University near Hirebagewadi toll plaza in upcoming days. Our department has adopted Student-centric approach by encouraging field work to study local flora for plant identification and Biodiversity. Study tours, industrial visits, visits to National Science institutes and laboratories & greenhouses etc... are routinely organized. Research experience through Student Research Projects is a part of our course curriculum.

Dr. M.B. Sridhara completed M.Sc., Degree in Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) securing First Class in 2002. He was awarded JRF (2003-2005) and SRF (2005-2006) Fellowship from University of Mysore, Mysore during Ph.D. tenure. He obtained Ph.D in Chemistry in 2008 from University of Mysore, Mysore. He also obtained M.Phil., Degree from Vinayaka Missions University, Salem, Tamilnadu, India. He worked as a Lecturer in PG Department of Chemistry, V.V. Pura College of Science, Bangalore from 2007 to 2008. He moved to PG Department of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at BET Academy of Higher Education, BharathiNagara, Maddur Taluk, Mandya District working as HOD of Organic Chemistry from 2008-2011.
He was awarded UGC-Post Doctoral Fellowship, New Delhi, India and worked at Department of Studies in Chemistry, University of Mysore, Mysore from 2011-2013.
Presently, he is working as Assistant Professor since 2013 in the Department of Chemistry having more than 14 years of teaching and 20 years of research experience. He teaches organic chemistry, Spectroscopy, Bioinorganic Chemistry, Nanomaterials and Liquid Crystals to M.Sc., Students and is supervising Ph.D scholars.
He has published 27 research papers in peer reviewed national and international journals of high repute and more than 29 research articles presented at various national and international conferences/Symposium/Seminars. Recently he has filed One Indian Patent.
His research interest lies in the fields of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Bio-Conjugation of Important Biologically Active Heterocycles to Amino Acids and Peptides, Solution Phase Peptide Synthesis, Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry.
He has also received review recognition awards from European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Chemical Data Collections (Elsevier Journals) and Journal of Peptide Science (Willey Journal).
He is a Life Member of Indian Peptide Society (IPS), Mumbai, India, Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Calcutta India and Indian Society of Analytical Sciences (ISAS).He has received two research funding from RCU-MRP as PI and one research funding from VGST, GoK as Co-PI. He is a member of BOS, Doctoral Committee, BOAE, BOE and Department Council in our university. He is also served as BOE-Chairman (PG), Department of Chemistry, RCUB.
He is actively involved in teaching and research. He has successfully guided one Ph.D candidate for the award of Ph.D Degree and currently two Ph.D candidates are working under his guidance.
Presently, he is working as a Coordinator, Department of Botany, RCUB.

Summary: A study tour was conducted as part of the academic curriculum for 1st Semester students of Botany department. The journey was planned to include a group of 32 students of 1st semester and 3 faculty supervisors accompanied namely Dr. Ashwinigajakosh, Mr. Mithun R & Mr. Naveen Hanchinamani to Dajipur Wildlife Sanctuary (UNESCO World Heritage site.) Radhanagari and Sindhdurgh Maharashtra, which was scheduled from 3rd February to 6th February 2025.

Summary: On 30th January 2024, the Department in association with Zoology Department organized Laboratory inauguration and Induction program for newly admitted students.
Summary: To study flora diversity of vaccine depot area, the field visit was organized on 24th April 2024 as part of the academic curriculum for 1st Semester students of Botany department. A group of 33 students of 1st semester under the guidance of 2 faculty supervisors namely Mr. Mithun R & Mr. Naveen Hanchinamani participated in the activity.
Summary: On 29th February 2024, Science Day celebration was organized by Students and Faculty members of Botany department. Students organized exhibition of Millets, demo experiments, charts, paintings etc.

Summary: NITM-ICMR Research Center in Belagavi is a national science institute which focuses on research in traditional medicines, the visit was conducted for demonstrations related to “tools and techniques in biotechnology” as it is important part of PG 4th semester Practical curriculum of M.Sc. BOTANY.
