1. ABOUT


The Post-Graduate Department of Studies and Research in Economics is one of the founding departments of Rani Channamma University. Established in 1982 with the inception of the Karnatak University Post-Graduate Centre in Belagavi, the Department offers both Post-Graduate and Ph.D. programmes in Economics. To meet the growing demand for higher education in the region, the Department also operates at J.S.S. College in Gokak. Beginning with the academic year 2024–25, the entire syllabus has been revised and updated to reflect recent developments in the field. Recognizing the importance of Mathematics and Statistics in understanding modern economic theories, the curriculum now emphasizes these areas. Additionally, project work has been made mandatory in the final semester to enhance research skills. Since its establishment, the Department has shown steady growth in both student strength and academic output.

With a focus on both academic excellence and social relevance, the department emphasises interdisciplinary research and evidence-based policy analysis to address contemporary economic challenges. Our mission is to empower students with the skills and knowledge needed to become future-ready economists, researchers, educators, policymakers, and entrepreneurs. Through active community engagement and strategic collaborations with academic institutions, industries, and government bodies, the department aims to contribute meaningfully to inclusive and sustainable development.

Goals

The department aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of economic principles, focusing on the efficient allocation of scarce resources to improve living standards and societal welfare. It seeks to promote sustainable development, equitable resource distribution, and the creation of policies that address global and regional economic challenges. By encouraging research, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making, the department prepares students to analyses complex economic issues, advocate for economic justice, and contribute to social welfare. Through practical learning experiences, the department equips students with the analytical skills and social responsibility needed to succeed in diverse careers and engage with communities to promote informed economic decision-making.

Achievements

The department of Economics regularly organizes seminars, workshops and training programmes for its students and University fraternity. From 2021-2024 a total of 21 candidates enrolled for Ph.D in Economics. More than 40 students from the Department have cleared competitive examinations such as KSLET, etc.

2. PROGRAMMES


M.A. in Economics
Eligibility Candidates who possess a degree of Rani Channamma University or a Degree of any other university recognized as equivalent there to with Economics/ Agricultural Marketing as one of the subjects, having at least 45% of marks in aggregate at degree level is eligible to apply. However, relaxation in respect of SC/ST/Cat-I will be followed as per prevailing rules of the University and Government Orders from time to time.
Admission Criteria The admission shall be made as per the reservation policy and directions issued in this regard from time to time by the Government of Karnataka and also as per rules as prescribed by the University from time to time.
Mode of Study Regular-Full-Time
Programme Duration 02 Years - 04 Semester CBCS Scheme
Scope The department offers a postgraduate (MA) programme in economics that provides in-depth knowledge of advanced economic theories, international economics, economic growth and development, and The programme includes specialized courses in Mathematics for Economics and Statistics for Economics, which equip students with the quantitative tools required to analyses economic data and model economic phenomena. The curriculum emphasizes research opportunities, focusing on both theoretical and applied economics, and prepares students for careers in government, banking, finance, research, and teaching.
Career Prospects Knowledge of Economics is useful for a career in finance, industry, commerce and public administration and is invaluable to anyone interested in understanding the forces underlying social, political and economic change in India, Asia and beyond. Economists are sought after in many spheres of business and are especially important to large industry.

Ph.D. in Economics
Eligibility Candidates who have secured at least 55% of aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/Cat-1/Physically challenged) or equivalent grade under grading system, in their Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from the recognized Universities/ Institutions from India and abroad.
Admission Criteria As per University Guidelines/Ph.D Regulations
Mode of Study Full-Time/Part-Time
Programme Duration Every full time candidate shall take a minimum of three years and maximum of five years, and every part time candidate shall take a minimum of four years and a maximum of six years from the date of Provisional Registration.
Scope The Ph.D. in Economics offers a comprehensive platform for in-depth research in various economic fields, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, development economics, econometrics, and international trade. The program fosters critical thinking, analytical skills, and advanced research methodologies, preparing graduates for careers in academia, research institutions, government, and private sectors.
Career Prospects A Ph.D. in Economics opens a wide array of career prospects. In academia, graduates can pursue teaching and research positions. Outside academia, roles are available in government agencies, think tanks, and international organizations. In the private sector, Ph.D. economists are valued in financial institutions, consulting firms, and multinational corporations as analysts, consultants, and data scientists.

Department Research Profile

Established in the year 1982, the Department has the vision of Excellence in Education, Research and Extension towards integrated and prosperous economy. The Department conducts need based economic research surveys and studies, organizes seminars and workshops and undertakes outreach and consultancy activities in economics. The thrust areas include Academia of Rural Finance and Banking. Energy Economics, Environmental Economics, Resource Economics, Development Economics, International Economics, Agricultural Economics, Health Economics, Gender Economics and Demographic Studies.
