1. About the Department of Studies in English


The Department of Studies in English was established in the year 2011-12, when Rani Channamma University, Belagavi was accorded an independent status. Presently with six faculty members, the department is full-fledged with one Senior Professor, two Professors, two Associate Professors serving at the main campus and one Assistant Professor at P.G. Centre, Vijaypur. With a student strength of hundred and above, the department is vibrant with teaching-learning, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities conducted throughout the year. The department functions with a holistic purpose to provide a congenial atmosphere for the overall development of the personalities of the students and hone their skills and maximize their potentials to compete in today’s global world.

Vision

To emerge as a model academic centre for the study of, and research in language, literature and culture by developing the best teaching practices and introducing latest thrusts and trends in English studies.

Mission

Committed to the ideals of transformative learning paradigm, the department hopes to expand the parameters of English studies by fostering a meaningful dialogue between various disciplines by expanding the terrain of literary studies to include cultural studies.

Goals

The Department aims at:

  • Equipping the students with conceptual and theoretical tools to help them analyze complex cultural texts.
  • Sensitizing the students to the local and the particular even as they meet the challenges of globalization and rapid modernization.

  • The Department has Organized National Conference, Seminars, Workshops and Symposium.
  • Alumni of the Department are pursuing Higher Education (PhD) & have Qualified NET/SLET exams.
  • Some Alumni of the department have secured Govt. Jobs etc.
  • Sr. Prof. V. F. Nagannawar served RCUB as VC (Acting) from 4th July 2023 to 4th March 2024.
  • Sr. Prof. V. F. Nagannawar is appointed as Academic Member for IIAS, Shimla since 2024.
  • Sr. Prof. V. F. Nagannawar is the President of India Nominee for Court in Jamia Mila Islamia University, Delhi.
  • Sr. Prof. V. F. Nagannawar has served as Syndicate Member and Dean, Faculty of Arts of RCUB.
  • Prof. Kavita Kusugal worked in Book Authority committee to select annual books for publication.
  • Prof. Kavita Kusugal Member of editing committee to edit 17 books in Children Literature (Kannada Development Authority Govt. of Karnataka).
  • Prof. Kavita Kusugal Member of Policy Making Committee in Kannada book authority.
  • Prof. Kavita Kusugal has been awarded Toru Dutt Award by AIPC.
  • Prof. Nagaratna V. Parande has been awarded a fellowship by Leiden University Netherlands for 3 months as a Research Fellow at IIAS, Leiden University, Netherlands from July - Sept 2024.
  • Dr. Pooja P. Halyal participated in 51st Annual International Conference of the Joseph Conrad Society (UK), London.
  • Dr. Pooja P. Halyal has been awarded Sarojini Naidu Award by AIPC.

8. Activities (2021-2025)


The department has organized workshops on "Career Scope in English," and Alumni Meets to guide students about career prospects. An "Environmental Awareness Day" was celebrated to encourage students to understand the importance of nature in literature and ecological balance. The department also conducts an Interdisciplinary Lecture Series to expand students' horizons in English Literature studies.
