The university conducted a campus tree census within the last three years, documenting 4,573 trees with species identification, scientific names, and girth classification. The census supports biodiversity conservation, green cover monitoring, and sustainable campus management. Around 70% of the campus is under green cover. The university prioritizes native and indigenous species in its plantation drives by planting and maintaining species such as Pongamia pinnata, Syzygium cumini, Terminalia tomentosa, Ficus benghalensis, Artocarpus heterophyllus, and Madhuca longifolia, thereby promoting biodiversity and ecological sustainability. A botanical garden is under development. The university avoids the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by promoting organic manure, vermicompost prepared on campus, and eco-friendly gardening practices for landscape maintenance. The university regularly monitors campus biodiversity through tree censuses, plantation records, and periodic assessment of its green cover and plant diversity. Students and faculty actively participate in biodiversity conservation through tree plantation drives, campus greening activities, and environmental awareness programmes. The Department of Geography plays a leading role in organizing plantation programmes and promoting biodiversity conservation on the campus. The university collaborates with the Forest Department for biodiversity conservation initiatives. As part of this commitment, the university adopted a tigress named "Kanishka" for the year 2025–26, supporting wildlife conservation and environmental stewardship. The university maintains its campus landscapes through sustainable gardening practices using organic manure, vermicompost prepared on campus, and minimal use of chemical fertilizers.

III. Carbon & Climate Action


The university has not yet conducted a formal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory; however, it promotes carbon reduction through tree plantation, renewable energy use, energy conservation, and other sustainable campus initiatives. The university has formally established carbon reduction targets through its sustainability policy, focusing on increasing renewable energy use, improving energy efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The university promotes the use of electric vehicles (EVs) among staff and encourages carpooling for students and staff members. The university uses solar photovoltaic (PV) panels as a renewable energy source and promotes the use of electric vehicles (EVs) to encourage clean and sustainable energy practices on campus. The university undertakes carbon offset initiatives through regular tree plantation drives and biodiversity conservation activities, contributing to carbon sequestration and environmental sustainability. The university regularly monitors and analyzes electricity consumption to assess energy use and identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency. Monthly electricity consumption data are reviewed to support energy conservation and sustainable campus management. As the university campus has approximately 70% green cover and supports a variety of plant species, this is an achievable goal and can be accomplished with minimal effort. Students actively participate in climate literacy and action campaigns through tree plantation drives, environmental awareness programmes, Green Audit activities, and sustainability initiatives organized by the university. The university incorporates climate-resilient practices such as rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, renewable energy, plantation drives, and green landscaping into campus planning to reduce environmental risks.

IV. Green Infrastructure & Energy Efficiency


The university has adopted green building practices in all future construction projects. As the existing campus was built in the 1990s, such initiatives were not considered at that time. LED lighting systems have been installed across academic buildings, hostels, offices, and other campus facilities. Solar water heaters are used for heating water in the hostels. Vertical landscaping and green wall practices help improve natural cooling and air circulation within campus buildings. In addition, vertical cross-ventilation walls have been constructed at many locations to facilitate proper ventilation and natural lighting. Sustainable materials are used in new construction projects. RCUB provides electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities on campus for the convenience of its staff, students, and visitors. The university regularly monitors electricity consumption and implements energy conservation measures such as solar energy and LED lighting to improve energy efficiency. The university has adopted energy conservation measures focusing on renewable energy, LED lighting, motion-sensor lighting, and efficient energy use across the campus.

VII. Water Management & Conservation


The university follows a comprehensive water management system, including rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, wastewater reuse, and well water management. Rooftop rainwater harvesting systems and recharge pits have been established across the campus. At many locations on the university campus, low-flow fixtures have been installed and are in use, reducing water consumption. These fixtures are installed in public water-use areas where water consumption is highest. Landscaping is optimized for water efficiency. Students participate in environmental awareness programmes that include water conservation and sustainable resource management. Regular water quality monitoring is carried out by the university's internal team, and the results are attached in the annexure of this report. Annual water consumption is tracked and reported.

VIII. Sustainable Transport


"No Two-Wheeler Zone" regulations and vehicle restrictions are implemented on designated pathways within the university campus. RCUB provides electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities on campus for the convenience of its staff, students, and visitors. More than 70% of the students and staff use either public transport or carpooling. To reduce carbon emissions on campus, the entry of outsiders' vehicles is restricted to designated areas. In addition, Pollution Under Control (PUC) testing of university vehicles is conducted at regular intervals to ensure compliance with emission standards. Circulars and signages are displayed to promote eco-friendly transportation practices, including the use of public transport, carpooling, and electric vehicles.

IX. Waste Management & Circular Economy

Organic waste generated from campus vegetation and landscaping activities is generally managed through conventional disposal methods, with increasing awareness of sustainable alternatives such as composting. composting units or biogas plants are in process, and the University’s extensive green campus environment provides potential for future organic waste recycling systems that can return nutrients to soil and support circular resource use.

Recycling practices for materials such as paper, plastics, and other recoverable waste operate at a basic level and are supported by general municipal waste management systems. Formal tracking systems and structured agreements with certified recycling vendors are in process; environmental awareness initiatives encourage responsible disposal, reduction of waste generation, and increased recovery of reusable materials.

E-waste generated from academic and administrative activities is managed in accordance with standard institutional and regulatory guidelines, typically through authorized external agencies. Although e-waste management contracts are limited, the University follows general compliance norms to ensure safe disposal, reduce toxic material exposure, and protect environmental quality.

The University has undertaken efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastics through awareness campaigns and institutional encouragement of environmentally responsible practices. NSS units and student groups actively participate in cleanliness drives and environmental programmes that promote behavioral change and encourage waste minimization across the campus community.
